About the Library

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION

Library of Congress Classification System (LCC) is an alpha-numeric library classification system, which organizes all knowledge into 21 classes. Each broad class is identified by a single letter; subclasses by combinations of letters and subtopics by numbers (e.g.: K5302.F73 2005).
The LCC came into being in the early twentieth century. It was devised to replace the classification system invented by Thomas Jefferson used by the Library of Congress since the early nineteenth century.
