Placing Holds
Holds may be placed on all books on loan.
One student may have a maximum of five concurrent holds.
If you wish to place a hold on an item, please fill in a Reservation Request Form and hand it over to the duty librarian at the Circulation Desk.
When the item is returned, the reader will be notified by email that the book can be collected. The item will then be put On Hold at the Desk.
If you fail to pick up your holds within three days it will be put back to circulation.
Course Reserves
The Required Readings Area of the Reading Hall is dedicated to books, readers or other Library materials excluded from circulation for the duration of a course or the current term. Materials are placed in the Required Readings Area upon the request of the lecturer in order to make all course readings constantly available for the students in the Library. Books marked as Required Reading cannot be borrowed.
To take advantage of the Required Readings Service of the CEU Library, professors are kindly asked to contact the Library before the course starts. Please use the RESERVE REQUEST FORM and the E-RESERVE REQUEST FORM, respectively when submitting required readings. Use one form per course, print or type information and complete all applicable blanks. The form is available at the Circulation Desk or may be downloaded from here. If not otherwise requested, books (and electronic reserves) will be returned to circulation at the end of the term.
Please try to fill the request forms correctly and completely. You can also indicate if you would like the books or readers to be overnight loan or not. To alleviate frustration on the part of the students and faculty we strongly encourage you to submit materials to the Library at least one week before the course starts. Please note that incomplete requests may be delayed.
Please submit at least two copies of each and every reader per course.
E-reserves Policy
- Electronic e-reserves can only be assigned if the Library possesses a legal copy of the work (i.e., by purchase, license, fair use, interlibrary loan, etc.).
- Generally, electronic reserve systems may include short items (such as an article from a journal, a chapter from a book or conference proceedings) or excerpts from longer items. For instance book chapters are limited to one chapter from a book, or if excerpts of a book limit them to 10% of the whole book.
- The total amount of material included in electronic reserve systems for a specific course as a matter of fair use should be a small proportion of the total assigned reading for a particular course.
- Copyright, appropriate citations and attributions to the source must be included.
- Always search for a library-owned electronic copy of periodical articles before submitting a photocopied article.
- E-Reserves is a password protected system, which means that only faculty teaching courses with assigned online materials may distribute passwords to students.
- Files may be placed on the CEU server into the e-reserve directory O:/Common/Electronic Reserves/Your Department for direct retrieval by the library staff. Please indicate that you want to place files into the ereserve folder for transfer to the Library.
- File naming conventions: Professor_Course_Author (e.g.: "Rieber_Moujiks_and_Czars_Lenin")
-
The completed and signed e-reserves sheet should be delivered to the Library.
- Eletronic reserves can eventually be searched in the catalog under Professor and Course respectively.
Photocopying in the Library
Photocopying and printing facilities and the following services are available in the Library: black & white and colour printing, black & white photocopying, printing from microfilm and microfiche. CEU students, faculty and staff can use their printing quota; every page printed in the Library is deducted from this quota. Only CEU Library materials may be copied, scanned and printed in the Library in accordance with the pertinent copyright regulations.

Computing
The CEU Library aims at providing services utilizing all means of information technology. Its computer network is integrated with that of the Central European University, so all computer-based services are accessible throughout the CEU Budapest teaching site.
There are over forty computers in the Reading Hall. The stand-alone terminals are dedicated to catalog searches; all other computers offer internet-access, including links to web-based and networked CD-ROM databases licensed by the CEU Library. Reading Hall computers are occupied on a first come - first served basis.
Computers in the Multimedia Library are configured for multimedia applications and single-user CD-ROM searches. To aid bibliographic research, the EndNote software is installed at one designated terminal in the Reading Hall. The Multimedia Library operates an advance sign-up system to reserve the desired equipment.
Members are welcome to use their own laptops; power outlets are available throughout the Reading Hall. (Laptop cases may be checked by the Security guard when leaving the Library.)
There are printing, copying and scanning facilities available in the Library.
Training
The CEU Library offers subject specific user instruction sessions (library tours) to introduce new members of the Library to its collections and services as well as hands-on practice in the use of web-based and networked CD-ROM databases available to library members.
We strongly advise all new members to take advantage of the library tour in order to familiarise themselves with the physical locations of materials, learn about standard procedures and become acquainted with the online catalog.
Library tours and database training sessions are organized for all new CEU students during the Pre-Session period and are offered to all groups of CEU guests who intend to use the CEU Library.
To request a library tour please contact Katalin Oblath-Tikos, Head of Public Services at 327-3037, or send an e-mail to tikosk@ceu.hu
